2019: The Cubs Will Be Back

It’s been 5 days since the Cubs season unfortunately ended. Many questions have been addressed, including the big one. Joe Maddon is expected to return as the Cubs skipper. Cole Hamels and Jesse Chavez want to come back. And the Cubs will be back in 2019.

This season was obviously a disappointment to the Cubs. There was never a sense of winning it all for the final month. The Brewers were gaining so much ground while the Cubs were just skidding along. Then when it came down to the final week, things were very tight in the NL Central.

The Cubs lost 2 out of the last 3 games. All 3 were critical to determining the Cubs playoffs position. The tiebreaker loss on Monday really sunk the ship. Facing the Rockies in the NL Wild Card on Tuesday, the Cubs were in do or die mode. Just how much of the season had gone, the Cubs had no run support. And they lost 2-1 in 13 innings.

Fast forward to today, the first round of the playoffs is underway. And the Cubs aren’t in it. This should be a wakeup call for Theo, Joe Maddon, and this entire team. The Cubs are going to have a chip on their shoulder.  After winning 95 games that should win a division, the Cubs faltered in the most critical stretch.

This team is still good, and the rotation could be incredible.

Imagine signing back Cole Hamels. Imagine a decent Yu Darvish that can win 10-15 games. All on top of Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, and Jose Quintana dominating. Especially when they know that they have to carry this team after the 2018 season.

We’re not even going to account for the potential of Bryce Harper. The Cubs positional players can be in for an incredible season:

  • Willson Contreras breaks out of his slump.
  • David Bote will play the entire season.
  • Kris Bryant hopefully will be healthy and play like his MVP self.
  • Javy Baez has another strong year after a breakout 2018.
  • Anthony Rizzo will continue to be the leader.
  • Albert Almora continues to improve, and his defense only gets better.
  • Kyle Schwarber gets back on track and crushes 30 bombs.

Just imagine what this team can be. Just a few changes, including probably adding batting practice before games. The Cubs are once again in contention for a World Series. Even before they might shake up the free agent market.

Don’t worry Cubs fans, we are still good. The Cubs are still young. The Cubs still have a tremendous amount of potential. The Cubs will be back and better than ever.
