How it Happened

The Cubs and Mets went back-and-forth in this one. Insurance runs in the 7th and 8th inning sealed this win for the Cubbies. Down 1-0 in the first, Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI double tying it 1-1. The Cubs were down 3-1 in the third and took their first lead. Javy Baez scored on a wild pitch and Jon Lester, yes Jon Lester, cranked an RBI single! The Cubs led 4-3.

The Mets tied it 4-4 in the seventh off Steve Cishek. Cishek finally allowed a run, his first in 13 appearances. However, the Cubs got the run back and several more. Ben Zobrist hit a key RBI single in the 7th, putting the Cubs on top 5-4. They weren’t done yet, as Willson Contreras grounded into a fielder’s choice RBI. Leading 6-4 still was not enough.

Anthony Rizzo added the key insurance run, with a 1-run homer in the 8th. The Cubs led 7-4 with all the momentum. The 9th inning was a struggle. Jesse Chavez came through with two big outs as the Cubs won 7-4.
