MLB Announces Cubs Players Weekend Special Nicknames

It’s that time of the year again, MLB Players Weekend is coming up. From Friday, Aug. 24 to Sunday, Aug. 26, every team will be wearing special uniforms consisting of the players’ nicknames on the backs. There were some good ones from the Cubs last year, and they are just as good this year:

Albert Almora Jr.: “TICO”
Anthony Bass: “FISH”
Javier Baez: “EL MAGO”
David Bote: “BOAT”
Kris Bryant: “KB”
Victor Caratini: “VIC”
Tyler Chatwood: “CHATTY”
Jesse Chavez: “DADO”
Steve Cishek: “SPEEDPASS”
Willson Contreras: “WILLY THE BEAST”
Yu Darvish: “YU-SAN”
Brian Duensing: “DEUCE”
Carl Edwards Jr.: “STRINGBEAN SLINGER”
Cole Hamels: “HOLLYWOOD”
Justin Hancock: “HERBIE”
Ian Happ: “HAPPER”
Kyle Hendricks: “HENDO”
Jason Heyward: “J-HEY”
Brandon Kintzler: “SALT”
Tommy La Stella: “LA STELLA”
Jon Lester: “LEFTHANDER”
Brandon Morrow: “B MO”
Mike Montgomery: “MONTY”
Jose Quintana: “LELO”
Anthony Rizzo: “TONY”
Randy Rosario: “PELO FINO”
Addison Russell: “ADDY”
Kyle Schwarber: “SCHWARBS”
Drew Smyly: “SMILES”
Pedro Strop: “STROPY”
Justin Wilson: “J WILLY”
Ben Zobrist: “ZORILLA”

Tommy La Stella’s, “La Stella” is probably the most clever of all.

A lot of the nicknames look pretty similar. There are 12 new Cubs this year and their nicknames are clever. Carl Edwards still takes the cake. Last year he sported “Carl’s Jr.” and this year will have “Stringbean Stringer”. Another favorite is David Bote’s, “Boat” nickname.

All kinds of Players Weekend merchandise are available at MLB.com.
