The Cubs won the series opener 3-1 over Kansas City.
Javy Baez: 2 for 4, HR, 1 R, 2 RBI
Ben Zobrist: 2 for 5, 1 R
Addison Russell: 2 for 4
Cole Hamels: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, Win (2-0)
Pedro Strop: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 2 K, SV (8)
How it Happened
Kansas City scored a run in the second. After that, it was all Cubs as Cole Hamels was smooth sailing. It was a 1-1 in the fourth right before a short rain delay. Royals starter Jakob Junis threw a wild pitch, scoring Ben Zobrist from third. It was the “El Mago” show from here on out.
Javy Baez blasted a one-run homer in the sixth, giving the Cubs a 2-1 lead. 105.8 mph off the bat, it was a no-doubter from “El Mago”. He also added to the lead later. Baez doubled to right in the 8th, scoring Jason Heyward all the way from first. Thanks to fantastic baserunning from Heyward, the Cubs led 3-1. Pedro Strop worked a clean ninth with 2 Ks picking up the save, as the Cubs won 3-1.
One Great Moment
Another day, another incredible defensive highlight from Javy Baez. “El Mago” is an MVP without a doubt now. Baez just keeps on making sparkling defensive and offensive highlights. Check out a potential run-saving grab here:
