The Cubs have three All-Stars this year. Javy Baez, Willson Contreras, and Jon Lester made it to the big game. All three were selected to participate in the 2018 MLB All-Star Game.
Javy Baez, the starting second baseman, is having a phenomenal year. Baez is batting .295 with 17 homers and 65 RBI through 85 games. Baez ranks second in the National League in RBI. He’s been the most exciting player on offense and defense this year for the Cubs. Baez received overwhelming support with over 2.7 million votes. This surprisingly will be his first All-Star game.
Willson Contreras, the starting catcher, has also been spectacular this year. Contreras is batting .287 with 7 bombs and 34 RBI in 77 games played. His numbers are by far some of the best amongst catchers in the National League. Just like Baez, Willson Contreras is a first-time All-Star selection. He received 2.1 million votes, just barely edging out the other catchers.
Jon Lester will be an All-Star pitcher, as he’s been the Ace of the Cubs staff. Lester is 11-2 with a 2.45 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 18 starts. He’s by far off to a career year reaching ten wins faster than any other year. He’s limited batters to just a .221 average this year. Lester’s tied for the most wins in the National League and ranks seventh for ERA. This will be his fifth All-Star selection, and second as a member of the Cubs.
All three are very deserving of the All-Star nods. Baez, Contreras, and Lester have led the Cubs to a 51-36 record this year as one of the best teams in the National League. It’s an exciting time to be a Cubs fan after a 7-1 homestand and now three All-Star selections.
The All-Star game takes place in Washington D.C. on July 17th, 2018 at 8:00 PM Eastern. It will be televised by Fox.
