Thanks to Javy Baez and Willson Contreras, the Cubs won their sixth straight game 5-2 over the Tigers for another series sweep at Wrigley on Wednesday.
Willson Contreras: 2 for 3, HR, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Ben Zobrist: 2 for 4, 1 R
Javy Baez: 1 for 4, 1 R
Jose Quintana: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB. 4 K
How it Happened
Jose Quintana gave up his two runs both on solo homers in the first three innings and was otherwise very solid, earning the win. The Cubs got on the board early in the second with David Bote’s first career home run into center field, tying the game up 1-1 at the time. After Detroit hit their second homer of the day, Javy Baez tied up the game again, all thanks to himself. Baez singled to left, stole second, swiped third on a throwing error, and then stole home on a pickoff attempt. The ridiculous base-running sequence tied it up 2-2 and changed momentum quickly.
Later in the sixth, Willson Contreras gave the Cubs their first lead of the game with his solo homer into center, making it 3-2 Cubs. Contreras was also the one to add insurance runs to the lead with an RBI double in the seventh, his next at-bat, putting the Cubs on top 5-2. Solid relief pitching helped the Cubs keep the Tigers from scoring again, as they won 5-2.
One Great Moment
El Mago. The guy just doesn’t stop making incredible plays. Thanks to Javy’s hustle on the base paths, the Cubs tied the game back up en route to a three-run win over the Tigers for the series sweep. Check out the ridiculous hustle from Baez:
