The Cubs just keep on finding ways to win. Tommy La Stella helped spark a 3-run fifth inning as the Cubs came back to beat the Tigers 5-3 for their fifth straight win.
Jason Heyward: 2 for 4, 2 R, 1 RBI
Kyle Schwarber: 2 for 4, HR, 1 R, 1 RBI
Willson Contreras: 2 for 3, 1 BB
Anthony Rizzo: 1 for 4, 2 RBI
How it Happened
Kyle Hendricks gave up three runs in the first four innings to the Tigers, but that would be all for Detroit and Hendricks as the Cubs prevailed. Tommy La Stella started the 5th with a double that led to back-to-back RBI doubles from Albert Almora and Jason Heyward as the Cubs suddenly only trailed by one run. Anthony Rizzo tied it up in the 5th with his RBI single to left center, making it a 3-3 ball game. Later, Rizzo would tack on one more to the Cubs lead with a fielder’s choice in the 7th, putting the Cubs up 4-3. That wasn’t it for the Cubs, as Kyle Schwarber added an insurance run in the 8th via a bomb to right, putting the Cubs on top 5-3. Relief pitching allowed just one hit with five strikeouts, as the Cubs held on to win 5-3.
One Great Moment
Kyle Schwarber’s on pace for nearly 40 bombs this year and came through when needed for an extra insurance run for the Cubs. Check out Schwarber’s latest homer that gave the Cubs some breathing room:
