Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/4


South Bend, Myrtle Beach, and Tennessee all won on Tuesday, with dominant pitching along the way.

Low-A: Eugene Emeralds

Eugene 0, Everett 1 (7-12, 4th Place)

  • SS Christopher Morel went 2-for-4, his second-straight multi-hit game.
  • RF Nelson Velazquez went 1-for-2 with two walks.
  • RHP Ryan Williams tossed 5.0 solid innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, and three walks while striking out one.

Single-A: South Bend Cubs

South Bend 6, Bowling Green 3 (7-6, 4th Place)

  • 1B Jared Young went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
  • CF Zach Davis went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • LHP Tyler Thomas once again dominated, with 5.0 strong innings. Thomas gave up a two-run homer in the 2nd and was otherwise strong. Thomas walked none and struck out eight, now up to 32 strikeouts in his last 22 1/3 innings pitched. He’s 3-5 this year with a 2.55 ERA and 0.90 WHIP. Thomas is about ready for a promotion to Myrtle Beach pitching the way he has thus far.

High-A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Myrtle Beach 3, Potomac 0 (5-8, 5th Place)

  • 2B Andruw Monasterio went 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored.
  • SS Aramis Ademan went 1-for-4 with a stolen base.
  • RHP Alex Lange threw 6.0 shutout innings for his fifth quality start this year and fourth shutout. Lange gave up only two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Double-A: Tennessee Smokies

Tennessee 5, Chattanooga 3 (8-4, T-1st Place)

  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a season-high tying four RBI.
  • 2B Trent Giambrone went 3-for-4 with a double.
  • RHP Thomas Hatch pitched 6.0 strong innings for the Smokies, giving up three runs and two walks with eight strikeouts. Hatch has now put together back-to-back quality starts for Tennessee, finally starting to set a consistent tone. He’s 6-4 this year with a 3.83 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.

Triple-A: Iowa Cubs

Iowa 5, Memphis 7 (29-54, 4th Place)

  • 1B Bijan Rademacher went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
  • LF Mark Zagunis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • 3B Jason Vosler went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
