Jon Lester needs to be in the early NL Cy Young talks because he’s having statistically one of the best seasons of his career. With his latest shutout win on Wednesday, Lester continues to prove he’s one of the best in baseball right now.
Through 15 starts this year, Jon Lester has been excellent with a 9-2 record, 2.10 ERA, and 1.09 WHIP. Ranked in the National League, Lester has tallied the second-most wins, third-lowest ERA, and sixth-lowest WHIP. Most recently for Lester over his last 12 starts, he has an impressive 1.67 ERA. Impressive stuff from Lester after what was a down year in 2017.
What really stands out from Lester in the first half has been the number of quality starts. He’s tossed nine out of fifteen so far, tied for the 6th most in the NL. Consequently, this has led to 9 wins on pace for the first 20-win season of his career. Not to mention he’s been backed by his teammates with the fifth-highest run support in baseball.
Digging further into the numbers, Lester’s not striking out a ton with 70 punchouts thus far but has pitched more strategically with the second-most fly outs in the National League. Opponents are batting just an anemic .207 against Lester as he’s been sharp. Overall, Lester’s given up just 21 earned runs, the fourth-fewest in all of baseball.
Jon Lester is producing excellent numbers and continues to be the Unsung Ace for the Cubs not recognized enough. Lester is one of the best in baseball right now and will soon be in the National League Cy Young talks if he continues to dominate like he has.
