RECAP — Cubs 0, Cardinals 5

The Cubs still won the road series over St. Louis 2-1 but fell in the finale on Sunday night 5-0. A big reason was that Javy Baez left the game in his first plate appearance in the 3rd inning.

Javy Baez Update

In Sunday’s loss, the Cubs were without Javy Baez for nearly six innings, who was hit in the elbow by a fastball in the 3rd inning. Luckily, it turns out to be minor and has a strong chance of not missing a game. Further x-rays are likely, but Baez and Joe Maddon don’t see anything major. Big break for the Cubs.

Standout Performers

Albert Almora: 2 for 4
Willson Contreras: 1 for 3, HBP
Jose Quintana: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO

How it Happened

Failing to capitalize on offense and poor hitting cost the Cubs big time. The Cubs had the bases loaded in the 3rd inning for the first chance to score after Jose Quintana had rolled through the first two innings. With two outs, Kris Bryant struck out leaving all three on base in what could have been a game determining moment. They got the bases loaded in the fourth inning also with two outs and Jose Quintana up to bat. Quintana struck out, leaving three on base. Those six runners left on base turned out to be huge ones because hits would come at a premium over the final 5 innings.

Jose Quintana had 5 nice innings up to 80 pitches without allowing a run. Joe Maddon tried to stretch it and put Quintana in the game in the 6th and was pulled after two singles. He got no outs as Maddon turned to the bullpen, where Anthony Bass gave up two runs but on a mistake from Addison Russell charging both runs to Quintana. Other than that, it was a fantastic day for Q despite taking the loss. The Cubs relievers didn’t have it in them and the offense was abysmal as they went on to lose 5-0.

Standings Check

The Cubs fall to 40-28 this season, still 0.5 games back from Milwaukee. They were in first place temporarily after the Brewers loss earlier in the day but fell back into 2nd after their loss.
