The Cubs fell in the series finale to Pittsburgh 7-1 on Sunday, but still won the series for their fifth series win in a row. The bats cooled off against the Pirates with just 4 hits and 1 run, as the Cubs four-game win streak ends.
Jason Heyward: 2 for 4, 1 R
Anthony Rizzo: 1 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Kyle Hendricks: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER. 2 BB, 4 SO
How it Happened
The only mistake of the game for Kyle Hendricks came against the very first batter, Josh Harrison, on a leadoff home run that put the Cubs down 1-0. Hendricks had a nice game from there but still took the loss because of the lack of offense. The Pirates scored five runs in the sixth inning off Cubs relievers Brian Duensing and Luke Farrell before the Cubs could even score. Anthony Rizzo grounded out to short and Jason Heyward made it to home plate from third that put the Cubs on the board. That was it for the Cubs scoring, Pittsburgh added another run and ended up winning 7-1.
The Cubs fall to 37-25 this season, still 0.5 games back of the first place Brewers.
Jose Quintana takes the mound for the Cubs on Monday in the series opener against Milwaukee at 7:10 PM CT on NBC Sports Chicago and 670 The Score. This three-game series is crucial because it decides the first-half divisional race for first place.
