RECAP — Cubs 3, Pirates 1

The Cubs won their third straight game with a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh in the series opener on Friday. Mike Montgomery got the start again and pitched well over six innings.

Standout Performers

Kris Bryant: 3 for 4, 1 R
Jason Heyward: 2 for 4, 1 R
Ben Zobrist: 1 for 3, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Mike Montgomery: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO

How it Happened

The Pirates scored just once, in the first inning off Mike Montgomery in what was his only bad inning. Luckily, Montgomery got the run support in the first two innings that propelled him to a strong outing. Ben Zobrist backed up Montgomery in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, that tied the game 1-1. Then Anthony Rizzo hit a sacrifice fly to left that gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead early. Zobrist once again drove in a run in the second inning, with a fielder’s choice that put the Cubs up 3-1. After that, pitching took over for both sides over the final seven innings as the Cubs went on to win 3-1.

One Great Moment

With potential problems in the third inning for Mike Montgomery with two runners on, Ian Happ got the third out on a nice diving catch. That wasn’t all the defensive highlights of the day for Happ, who made another diving catch for the third out in the sixth inning and still wasn’t done. Then came his third diving catch of the game and perhaps the best one in the ninth inning, with two outs that secured the win for the Cubs on the final play. Safe to say it was a spectacular defensive day for Ian Happ with some amazing highlights you can check out below.

Standings Check

The Cubs improve to 36-24 this season, still 0.5 games back of the first place Brewers.
