The Cubs 3-game win streak was snapped on Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to the Pirates, but they still managed to take two out of three games on the road in Pittsburgh for another series win.
Jason Heyward: 3 for 3, 1 BB
Addison Russell: 2 for 4
Javy Baez: 2 for 5, 1 RBI
Albert Almora: 1 for 5, 1 R
Kyle Hendricks: 5.0 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
How it Happened
Things were looking great for the Cubs early on in just the first inning with a leadoff double from Albert Almora and then an RBI single from Javy Baez scoring Almora making it 1-0 Cubs. However, the Cubs could not score again after the Pirates tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the same inning and then took a 2-1 lead in the second. Kyle Hendricks was sharp with just the mistake in the first inning allowing a one-run homer and the run in the second was on a sacrifice, but otherwise was solid. The Cubs offense wasn’t bad converting 9 hits, but they weren’t timely or key hits at the right moments. They left 11 on base which is a big reason we dropped this one 2-1.
One Great Moment
The Pirates fell as the victim of another play where they should not have even tried scoring when the ball reached Jason Heyward’s glove in right field. Heyward as expected nailed down the runner at the plate with of course the perfect tag from Willson Contreras saving a run in the fourth. Check out the incredible “One Great Moment” worthy highlight of the game.
