The Cubs blew a lead twice on Saturday to the Cardinals, falling in extra innings 8-6. Solid hitting came back, hence the solid pitching went away with the bullpen faltering in the final two innings.
Anthony Rizzo: 2 for 5, HR, 1 R, 2 RBI
Addison Russell: 2 for 5, 1 R
Ben Zobrist: 2 for 5, 1 RBI
Javy Baez: 1 for 5, HR, 1 R, 2 RBI
How it Happened
The Cubs got off to a hot start for the first time in awhile, scoring four runs in just the second inning off the Cardinals starter. Javy Baez hit an RBI groundout. Tyler Chatwood hit an RBI sacrifice, Ben Zobrist hit an RBI single, and Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI single in all a short span giving the Cubs a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals would respond later in the fourth, tying it up 4-4 with Tyler Chatwood pitching. Then in the sixth inning, Javy Baez gave the Cubs their lead back with a homer to left that made it a 5-4 game. Anthony Rizzo backed him up with a solo homer in the seventh inning into right that made it 6-4 Cubs. Just needing two outs in the ninth to win, Brandon Morrow gave up a game-tying RBI double forcing the game to go to extra innings. After the Cubs failed to score in the tenth, Luke Farrell gave up the game-winning home run as the Cubs lost 8-6.
One Great Moment
Remember the phenomenal defensive play Addison Russell made in 2016 with a diving catch and then making the throw while falling to the ground and recording the out at second? Russell made a play all to similar on Saturday that was almost nearly identical. It was scary close.
