The Cubs dropped the first game of a weather-shortened two-game set against St. Louis on Tuesday night, falling at Wrigley Field 5-3 but not all hope was lost. Javy Baez cashed in on another great performance, including hitting his fifth home run this season.
Javy Baez: 3 for 4, 1 R, 2 RBI
Jason Heyward: 1 for 4, 1 RBI
Kyle Schwarber: 1 for 3, 2 BB
How it Happened
The Cardinals got on the board first off Tyler Chatwood in the third inning with back-to-back at-bats leading to one run each time for a 2-0 lead over the Cubs. The Cubs had a response in the fourth inning with a one-out single from Jason Heyward that scored Addison Russell from second base who came running around the bases safe at the plate. Then the blow came in the eighth inning when the Cardinals tacked on three runs via the home run and single to extend the lead to 5-2 St. Louis, at least they thought so. Javy Baez delivered his fifth homer of the homestand in the bottom of that inning out to left center for 422 feet scoring Heyward and making it just a 5-3 deficit. The Cubs had some traffic in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and a chance to tie, but they came up short falling 5-3.
One Great Moment
Javy Baez has been on a tear over this past week, with five home runs and a team-leading 16 RBI, so how could we not show his home run from tonight at the One Great Moment of the game?
