RECAP – Cubs 5, Rockies 4

After being shut out by Arizona 2-0 on Sunday, the Cubs got back in the win column with a 5-4 final over the Rockies on Monday. You could deem it the “Ian Happ” game again because Happ once again homered in the leadoff spot, completely solidifying his case to be the leadoff man moving forward.

Standout Performers

Ian Happ: 4 AB, 3 H (HR), 2 R, 2 RBI
Anthony Rizzo: 1 AB, 1 H (HR), 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Addison Russell: 2 AB, 1 H, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Ryan Court: 1 AB, 1 H (HR), 1 R, 1 RBI
Justin Hancock: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, W
Oscar De La Cruz: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, S

How it Happ-ened

The Cubs were bound to win this game from the first pitch they saw. Ian Happ and Anthony Rizzo reached base in the first inning, and with one out, Addison Russell singled on a line drive to center field and knocked in Happ for an RBI. That would be however be all the Cubs runs in the inning, until just the third. While down 2-1 in the third inning, Anthony Rizzo started a trend for the Cubs hitting a solo-shot into right-center to tie it up 2-2. In the next inning, Ian Happ would also homer on a fly ball to center to make it a 3-2 lead. Later in the fourth inning, it would be Happ again responsible for a run with a single. Colorado would, however, have a response to the Cubs stretch, tying it up 4-4 in the sixth. Then the court was dismissed in the ninth inning by Ryan Court who homered to center to make it a 5-4 Cubs lead going into the final three outs. Oscar De La Cruz would get three quick outs yielding just one walk, and the Cubs went on to win 5-4.

One Great Moment

It obviously must be the Ian Happ home run that marked his fourth of Spring Training in the leadoff spot. It was not only that for Happ, it was also a great diving catch in the bottom of the second inning. We do not have footage of the sparkling play, but we do have the home run:

We saw some of the regular guys like Anthony Rizzo, Ian Happ, and Addison Russell each coming through with big performances for the Cubs. You know it’s getting closer to the regular season opener against Miami when the normal starters are going longer, and the pitcher is going into the third inning. Baseball is back, and the Cubs are ready to repeat!
