After a wild game at Hinkle Fieldhouse in which Butler knocked off #1 Villanova, the Bulldogs could not follow up the win against another Big East powerhouse Xavier falling 86-79.
Kamar Baldwin and Kelan Martin each teamed up once again for an incredible duo just like the last game, scoring over half of Butler’s points. Baldwin led all scorers with 28 points and 5 rebounds, while Martin added 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Paul Jorgensen chipped in 10 points. Baldwin, Martin, and Jorgensen combined for 63 points which is almost 80 percent of Butler’s points scored.
Butler shot 33-80 (41.2%) from the field, 7-27 (25.9%) from the three-point line, and 6-8 (75.0%) from the charity stripe. In addition, the Bulldogs hauled in 42 rebounds, dished out 13 assists, stole the ball 4 times, and blocked 5 shots. Butler only committed 5 total turnovers but had 25 personal fouls. Xavier was the slightly better team in team statistics, shooting 27-60 (45.0%) from the field, 8-20 (40.0%) from distance, and 24-37 (64.9%) from the free throw line. Despite the Musketeers owning a +18 mark from the free throw line, they still shot worse than Butler with far more attempts.
With the loss, Butler’s four-game win streak was snapped but things are still looking bright for the Bulldogs. Butler sits at 12-4 on the season and 2-1 in Big East play. They will look to get things back on track with a home game Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM Eastern against Seton Hall. The Pirates are 13-2 on the season and are ranked 21st in the national ranking.
