CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA.– The Indiana Hoosiers won their first game of 2017 on Saturday in a 34-7 rout of the Virginia Cavaliers.
The Hoosiers were backed up by QB Peyton Ramsey who entered the game in the second quarter. Richard Lagow was the starter after a phenomenal week one against Ohio State. He started the game 3-for-10 with an interception and that is when Ramsey came into the game and never looked back.
Ramsey finished 16-for-20 with 173 passing yards and 2 touchdowns. He was only supposed to play for a little bit but after a great performance coming in for Lagow, it looks like Indiana has a quarterback situation on their hands. Ramsey might win that battle because on top of his passing game, he ran the ball 12 times for 42 yards and a rushing touchdown. His day finished with 215 combined yards and three touchdowns from scrimmage. Ramsey’s longest carry was for 26 yards.
Morgan Ellison led IU in rushing with 12 carries for 47 yards. His longest rush went for 9.
It was a decent day on defense for the Hoosiers with DB Jonathan Crawford leading the way. Crawford recorded 11 total tackles, 6 solo tackles, and a pass deflection. LB Tegray Scales and DL Jacob Robinson combined for one sack. LB Chris Covington, DL Jerome Johnson, and DB Rashard Fant each recorded a tackle for loss.
WR J-Shun Harris II returned a punt for 44 yards late in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. IU only led by 10 before the play but ended the game doubling Virginia. On the day, Harris returned five punts for 109 yards with one of those going to the house.
Kicker Griffin Oakes went 2-for-2 on field goal attempts and 4-for-4 on extra point attempts. His longest field goal on the day went for 51 yards. Oakes accounted for 10 Indiana points.
